How to deal with fear and income gaps between gigs: 4 spiritual & practical tips
💫 Why this slow season might be the best thing for you and your career
“Any words of wisdom on mindset shifts and practical tips for feeling financially secure and steady during periods of intermittent client flow?”
Let’s talk about income gaps. Whether you’re a freelancer or creative between jobs, you just got laid off, quit your job, are having a low sales month, or maybe you it’s time to quit but you’re putting it off because you’re afraid about the lapse in income – a lot of fear and feelings arise in the in-between, so let’s talk about how to deal with it.
My mom would say, “If the parking lot is full, no new cars can pull in.” – Think of income gaps this way – they are the space where your upgraded vehicle is about to pull in… And before it does, YOU get to decide what it is. What a magical time to make a new, more intentional choice. Ask yourself:
How do I want to spend my time now?
Do I still enjoy what I do, or is it actually time for something new?
What have I learned in the past that I can implement now to make my work and life easier, more fun, and more purposeful?
What relationship dynamics show up at work that I can let go of?
How much money do I want to make now? Could you raise your rates or ask for a higher salary?
What do I want my life to feel like? How can my work support this?
This is your chance to get out of autopilot and start designing your life… see if you can tap into some excitement.
Dealing with fear + limiting beliefs
Instead of searching for new gigs in fight-or-flight mode and using a job to pacify your fear, this is your moment to uplevel your reality.
Freedom is mental, and life will continue to show us where we are thinking in limited ways. Even “good” things have limits – like your goal to make $100k [insert your number], or the way you call yourself a graphic designer [insert your craft]. Getting married to any idea presents a glass ceiling. So, while having goals and a sense of self are positive ways to move you forward, make sure they are not keeping you stuck in a small container.
Another key to freedom is feeling your feelings. Feelings are dematerialized when they are felt; they only persist in avoidance. During transitions, feelings like fear, doubt, insecurity, anxiety, boredom, regret, and self-judgment will surely be awakened. And what a gift, because now, you can feel them… Maybe that's the whole point of this downtime :) So stop trying to get rid of the feelings by getting a job – and instead, feel your feelings, and then… from a place of freedom, make your next move.
How to feel your feelings: This has been a BIG practice for me over the last few years. When I started seeing my current coach, I was stuck in a loop of analyzing my feelings instead of feeling them. What she taught me is simple: sit down, close your eyes, and be with whatever arises. Let the feelings wash over you in their fullest capacity, and sit with them until they dissipate. That is real self-love. Set a timer for 10 minutes to hold yourself accountable for this practice.
Leave the house + create opportunities for synchronicity
Stop obsessing over the computer and leave the house. Put yourself in the way of synchronicity, and follow your joy. Maybe the universe wants to push you into a new setting so that you can meet the next right client or get an amazing new idea. I got my newest client at Pilates class.
Remember to be a good vibe, provide value to others in conversation, and openly share what you do and what kind of opportunities you’re looking for. Be the kind of person that YOU would want to work with – this is how you will attract people to you. Nobody is interested in hiring or working with someone who is constantly complaining or bringing the energy down.
Understand how YOU manifest
There are many ideologies about how to manifest – in fact, I spent the last 5+ years building To Be Magnetic – so I am deeply acquainted with this type of content.
But nothing beats understanding your personal manifestation patterning. Think back on the times that big things have come to you—whether it was a job, move, relationship, or win of any kind—and see if there’s a theme around why and when things come through.
For me, opportunities come after I’ve been doing a lot of spiritual work, quickly and spontaneously… not actually as the result of much physical action. Usually, I’ve forgotten that I am the creator of my experience and have placed my power in something outside of myself—like a job or a person—as my sense of abundance.
I was talking to a friend who said her manifestations come when she’s doing personal creative projects—those get her noticed, and she gets jobs and opportunities from them.
Opportunities come to us in all different ways, so put down the self-help books and workshops for a moment, and take a look in the mirror.
Let go + get some money flow
Let go of stuff. Clean and get rid of clothing, books, furniture, junk around the house that don't resemble who you are or who you are becoming. What are you paying rent for that you don't even like? Making physical space goes a long way in welcoming in your next chapter.
While you’re doing this, start to get some money flowing. I always start by selling things I don't need on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Crossroads – this usually cracks the seal on more money coming in!
Here is $100 that I made at Crossroads Yesterday:
