⏰ 3 things I've learned from a few months of TikTok
TikTok is a party I was extremely LATE to. And even after the cops almost shut it down—I’m still inviting friends.
I started experimenting at the end of last year when I launched my e-course, How to Go Freelance. While none of my content has gone “viral” per se, I continue to grow by around 50 followers a day, and my content reaches the community that needs it. I’ve also used it to generate over 1,000 organic email leads to my website.
Before we go any further, I need to give a big shoutout to Grace McCarrick, who is 10 steps ahead of me on her content journey and taught me all the TikTok basics. She inspires me daily to keep at it, even when I start thinking it’s stupid or get discouraged by engagement. “Good job, now post another,” she says… which brings me to my first lesson:
Build in community: This feels like a generic platitude—but it’s the main fuel in my tank. Connecting with, hyping up, staying accountable, and building alongside other founders and creators is one of the most powerful ways to stay motivated. The people you meet online who are in the trenches building with you will be 100x more supportive than the people you know in real life. So find your people and cheer them on!
Sharing transparently and specifically gives you credibility: Since I’ve been teaching people how to make freelance income, I’ve had to qualify myself by sharing how much money I’ve made and what I charge clients. And while this could read as gauche, it’s what differentiates my content and legitimizes my advice. People on TikTok want to see receipts, or they won’t pay attention.
Get strategic with keywords: TikTok is a search engine. For any content I create, I ask myself, “What would the person who needs to hear this advice be searching for?” Then I title and caption the video accordingly. Instead of focusing on being unique, focus on being discoverable.
Have a lead magnet set up: Whether it's just a waitlist or a complete sales funnel, have a strategy in place to convert followers into leads for your business. Mine is an editable scope of work template that you can grab here. We don’t want your posts to go viral with nowhere for people to convert!
Will report back as I discover more… If you’re playing the TikTok game, follow me and we can high-five each other to the top.
