WFH Uniform: My guide to getting "zoom" ready in 5 minutes
💄 Getting dressed for work is a nice idea, but I must admit, I never really do.
I have been working for myself, from home, since 2017… so my wardrobe consists mostly of sweatpants and T-shirts. And while many recommend getting dressed for work for the sake of self-care and potential enhanced productivity, I must admit that, while I like these ideals, I just don’t really care about getting dressed for work—and I pretty much never do it.
Comfort is always #1 to me—even when I do shop for “real” clothes. I am that person who rips off their jeans and changes into sweatpants the SECOND I walk in the house if I’ve been out and about. So you certainly won’t catch me sitting in hard pants at the computer all day… to me, this is self-love.
Now, as someone who does a lot of consulting work on Zoom, I still need to look mildly professional up top—so I have broken this guide into 2 sections: “On Camera” and “Off Camera”
Besides WFH – I admit that I DO need and want to work on my sense of personal style, off campus. So I’ve been deep in my friend Erika’s Substack Long Live… If you want some real fashion advice, go to her.
But without further ado… here is my boring and honest guide to *not* getting dressed.
On Camera
It’s 10 minutes before a meeting on Zoom, and I’m in my PJs. What do I do?
Step #1: 5 Minute Hair & Makeup
Dyson Hair Dryer + Roll Brush: Wet or dry, my biggest 'camera-ready' hair hack is to use the roll brush to blow out just the front few pieces of my hair… I have some chin-length 'curtain bangs,' which makes this easy. Remember to roll away from your face on each side. Dyson products are expensive but worth it—I’ve had mine for 5+ years, and it dries your hair much more quickly than other hair dryers.
Kosas Brow Gel + Saie Mascara + Saie Dew Blush: Clean beauty is important to me (I learned everything about non-toxic ingredients when I did marketing for Follain) – and Kosas and Saie are my go-to makeup brands. I brush my eyebrows up, put on some mascara to open my eyes, and use my fingers to dab on some blush. Boom, she’s alive.
Machete Claw Clip + Gold Hoops: I remember pitching a claw clip business to my friends in the pool years ago, and they said it was a silly idea (who’s laughing now) – I always have one on me to pull my hair back. Then I put on some simple gold hoops, and I feel a little cuter than I did before.
Step #2: Left on Friday Getaway Button Down
My friend Emma did PR for LOF and sent me this linen top years ago. I never thought I was a 'classic white button-down' person, but this shirt changed things for me. I started wearing it 24/7, and since then have bought two new fresh ones. I know LOF is positioning it as a beach cover-up—but it can truly be worn for any occasion. Looks great crisp and ironed or casual and a little wrinkled. It’s a great one to throw on for a meeting because it makes you look professional and put together, but is oversized and comfortable! This is the most worn item in my entire wardrobe.
Other potential tops in my closet include this Jenni Kayne Sweater or a tee from MATE.
Off Camera
You better believe I am always comfy on the bottom. Some of my go-tos include:
These Sweats (I have them in 4 colors.) Everything Left on Friday makes is flattering and high quality.
These Shorts… I am trying to wear less microplastics, so MATE is a great option.
These Jeans… I know I said I had a no jeans policy, but these are basically sweatpants.
More jeans that feel like sweatpants…also very cute with heels if you are leaving the house!
These Slippers… Thank you, Dad, for always giving me five $25 L.L.Bean Gift Cards for Christmas.
